Russ and Laura - Path Less Pedaled

In 2009, Russ Roca and Laura Crawford sold everything they owned to travel by bike. Over the following three years, they pedaled across beautiful landscapes, connected with kind-hearted people, and explored dozens of small and rural communities – all the while, sharing stories from their travels, with the goal of inspiring others to also travel by bike.

Along the way, they began to recognize the ways in which bicycle travel can bring economic development to rural areas – and they began to partner with community members and rural tourism advocates to develop and grow the concept of bicycle tourism.

For Russ and Laura, bicycle tourism is about place-making, community development, and rediscovered hometown pride. It is a low-investment, low-impact, sustainable way to bring new people into an area, while maintaining the character that makes a community unique.

Now based out of Portland, Oregon, Russ and Laura work with communities and agencies who are using bicycling as an economic development tool. You can learn more about Russ and Laura and their adventures at www.pathlesspedaled.com.

Program Schedule

We are anticipating that the mix of attendees to the Southeast Regional Bicycle Tourism Summit to be about half comprised of state-level transportation, tourism, and economic development officials and advocates from Tennessee and surrounding states. The other half we expect to be made of up of representatives from counties and municipalities in the Greater Chattanooga area who have participated in the THRIVE 2055 long-term visioning process. As such, we are structuring the program along two tracks so that both audiences will attend the plenary sessions together, but will participate separately for breakout sessions in order to facilitate more relevant discussions. State-level participants, for example, will follow the "A" track, while local participants will follow the "B" track.
